The making of a Kitchen Vixen

Some people eat to live, but I've never been one of those people. I live to eat. I love good food and I love sharing it with friends and family. My obssession with cooking was started at a young age when I was always adding my own flavour to my mother's recipes. While she often shooed me out of the kitchen, I was smitten with the idea of creating new taste sensations-- an adventure that hasn't ended yet.

Julie & Julia -- make no apologies

You don't need to be as successful at blogging as Julie Powell to relate to the movie Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. As a food blogger, and more importantly as a foodie, there are very few degrees of seperation.

You gotta love the peg board kitchenI could see myself in the characters in so many ways. Child, being unusually tall for a woman and having a "need" to get a certificate from her Cordon Bleu teachers. And Powell for her unabashed zeal for cooking and her fearlessness in trying ALL the recipes in Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking."

Hubby and I had some laugh-out-loud moments when Child and her husband shared jokes about her cooking. And we exchanged knowing glances when Powell and her husband sat casually eating elaborately prepared food in their tiny apartment. And how can one not love a woman (Child) who makes no apologies for her cooking, even if it looks a little less than perfect sometimes?

Unlike Powell, my blog has been very much like the rest of my life, undirected. I don't have a goal with KitchenVixen.ca. I haven't chosen a specific cookbook to work my way through, and I'm not emulating any well-known chef. I'm just sharing what I know, and what I learn, because believe me, there is still so much to learn... and maybe that's the best part about cooking. Just when you think you know all there is to know about a certain method or ingredient, something new comes up and challenges your perceptions.

 What do you think?

I think that challenges are the most rewarding experience for any cook or chef! The anticipation builds as you create and one can only hope that in the end what looks amazing tastes just as incredible! And vice versa! There is nothing more disappointing then spending hours slaving over a hot stove to create a cataclismic fanfare and ruining it! Oh the shame! And I know , I have experienced this. No one can work in any kitchen and claim no mistakes. I have burned more cookies then I care to count, have had to retempter chocolate more then once, have added the wrong ingredient, the wrong amount, forgotten to turn on the oven, left the milk to boil over..many many a times, and the list does go on and will do so I am certain! That's life when one expects perfection. The key is to always enjoy it and always strive to keep learning, and now and then laugh at one's self! I will endeavour to watch Julie and Julia as I love films as much as I love desserts. And then perhaps I will go home and turn to my old favorites: " Chocolat", "Babettes Feast", "Mostly Martha", "Big Night" etc. etc. and dream of what I will create next! No expectations! No limitations!

You can learn more from using more then one cookbook. Check out the recipes and decide what you like more. Study under all the great chefs...alittle of this and alittle of that.
